The Basis.
Your Unique Experience
I view human nature as an individualized experience and that each person strives for self-growth. While this self-growth can be hindered by internal and external factors, my goal is to help you determine your sense of self. Our individual experiences are rooted in emotional states which are learned and developed to protect our sense of selves. These maladaptive emotional states require space for processing and transformation into adaptive emotions. As a counsellor, I utilize Emotion-Focused Therapy to enhance emotional awareness in clients who struggle with understanding or managing their emotions. Additionally, I will integrate Person-Centered Therapy to provide a non-judgmental and supportive space, fostering growth and empowering clients to reach their fully actualized selves.
How Problems Arise
My understanding is that human problems develop when we are disconnected from our sense of self. This mismatch of our own sense of self and external or internal factors causes problems to arise in our daily lives and relationships. Through the expectation of others and societal pressures, we are unable to grow when these expectations do not align with our true sense of self. When we experience relationships where there is empathetic and genuine positive regard, there is space for the inner world to be explored and this incongruent sense of self dissolves. This process often involves identifying problematic emotional states, understanding their origins, and transforming them into adaptive, positive states of being. Through this realignment, individuals can achieve emotional and internal growth, develop healthier relationships, and grow towards self-actualization.
The Process of Change
I understand change as a process that occurs when there is an empathetic and trustworthy rapport between the counsellor and client. This relationship provides a safe and supportive space where clients feel valued and understood. This enables clients to explore their inner world without judgment. Change is controlled by the client through a non-directive approach and can occur when a proper rapport is established between counsellor and client. Through the experiencing of the inner world and emotional processes, the client can be guided and supported to develop emotional understanding and self-awareness. By fostering this connection, clients can confront challenges, process complex emotions, and gain clarity about their needs and values. Being a guide to our inner workings and emotional processes is where the positive outcomes of our therapeutic rapport can happen, empowering clients to move toward meaningful and sustainable growth. This ideology about the nature of change is evident within Person-Centered Therapy and Emotion-Focused Therapy.

Incorporation
My counselling practice incorporates findings from psychotherapy outcome research by utilizing evidence-based approaches that have been demonstrated to improve client outcomes. I integrate models such as Person-Centered Therapy and Emotion-Focused Therapy, which are supported by research for their effectiveness in fostering a strong therapeutic alliance, addressing emotional processes, and promoting self-growth.
My counselling approach focuses on acknowledging client needs throughout therapy and adjusting treatment when needed. I achieve this through practices like Routine Outcome Monitoring (ROM). ROM allows me to track client progress, identify potential challenges, and adjust treatment plans to ensure the most effective outcomes for clients. It allows for therapy to be a collaborative process between myself and the client.
Additionally, psychotherapy outcome research highlights the important role of the therapeutic relationship in achieving positive results. This aligns with my focus on creating a safe, empathetic, and supportive environment for clients. As a counsellor, I am committed to continually staying informed about emerging research to integrate new evidence-based strategies into my practice. I stay up to date with current research and counselling therapies to ensure adaptability and effectiveness for diverse client populations and diverse client needs.
An Integrative Approach
My approach to counselling incorporates elements of psychotherapy integration into my approach by tailoring my methods to meet the specific needs of each client. Together with the client, we identify the areas that need focus, and I draw on both Emotion-Focused Therapy and Person-Centered Therapy to address these needs and integrate these approaches when required. I use Emotion-Focused Therapy to help clients better understand and manage their emotions, creating space for growth and change. Person-Centered Therapy provides a supportive, non-judgmental environment where clients feel safe to explore their thoughts and experiences, helping them move toward their best selves.
By combining these two approaches, I can remain flexible in my work, adjusting as needed if one method isn’t working as expected. This allows me to provide counselling that is responsive to each client’s unique challenges and goals, ensuring that the therapy process is both effective and supportive of their personal growth.
I also use integration techniques with other therapies such as Solution-Focused Therapy. This allows for more flexibility in what approach is needed for the client.
